Solar Electricity (P.V.)

Solar electricity systems work by using panels made up of photovoltaic (P.V.) cells to convert sunlight into electrical energy. A number of panels are connected together to form a module, which is mounted on your roof. The panels then generate electricity from the sun, which can be used to power lighting and appliances in your home.

Solar P.V. systems are the world’s fastest growing energy technology. They produce green, renewable energy and do not release any harmful carbon dioxide or other pollutants, thus reducing your carbon footprint while also saving you money on your electricity bill.

The economic benefits of Solar PV systems have also increased with the introduction of the Government backed Feed-In Tariffs in the UK. Feed-In Tariffs are payments to ordinary energy users for the renewable electricity they generate.

Benefits of the Tariff

  1. A payment for all the electricity you produce, even if you use it yourself
  2. Additional bonus payments for electricity you export into the grid
  3. A reduction on your standard electricity bill, from using energy you produce yourself

To find out more about the Feed-In Tariffs, visit our FAQ page or see full details of the scheme at The Energy Saving Trust website.

Benefits of Solar PV

  • Cut carbon emissions – Solar electricity is clean, renewable energy and doesn’t release any harmful carbon dioxide or other pollutants. A typical home PV system could save around 1200 kg of carbon dioxide per year – that’s around 30 tonnes over its lifetime.
  • Cut your electricity bills – Sunlight is free, so once you’ve paid for the initial installation your electricity costs will be greatly reduced. A typical home PV system can produce around 50% of the electricity a household uses in a year.
  • Sell electricity back to the Grid – If your system is producing more electricity than you need, or when you can’t use it, someone else can – and you’ll get paid for it.
  • Increases the value of your property – A solar PV system can add value to your property by making it more energy efficient and cheaper to run.
  • No maintenance – With a long functional lifetime of 30+ years plus.
  • Silent in operation
  • No planning permission needed in most cases

Our engineers will assess your home for suitability and advise you on what size of system will bring you the most benefit.
